'TABU SORO'

"Guy's Eulogy"

Guy was born in London on Boxing Day 1926, he was the only son of Eric and Marjorie Lloyds.

Guy was educated at St Georges School in Harpenden, he had very fond memories of his school days, keeping in touch with the school throughout his life. His holidays were spent at 'Blue Anchor' in Somerset with his Grandparents and it is here that he developed his keen interest in the West Somerset Railway, of which he became a life member in later years.

On leaving school he entered the Architectural Association in London, but his studies were interrupted by the war, he then joined the Royal Engineers for a period of three years, one of which was spent in Germany.

After leaving the Army, Guy emigrated to Melbourne in 1949 deciding that there was a brighter future for Architects in Australia after the war, his parents followed shortly after and the family settled happily into their new life, Guy qualified as an Architect in Melbourne. During his years in Melbourne Guy worked for Dick Butler & Ass. Bates, Smart & McCutcheon, Stephenson & Turner and R.S. Demaine and Partners. A few of the better known buildings that he was involved with during this time were Barristers Chambers, The Royal Children's Hospital and the BP Building in St. Kilda Rd.

Guy and Shirley married in Melbourne in 1955, and the births of three sons followed, Christopher, Jeremy and Simon. The boys attended Christ Church Grammar School, in South Yarra where Chris became a Choir Boy.

In 1967 the family moved to Fiji where they spent 7 immensely happy years, during this time Chris and Jay were educated at The Southport School, in Qld, but enjoyed their holidays back in Fiji. Guy worked for the Fiji Government and was instrumental in the development of the then new Nadi International Airport.

Returning to Australia in 1973, the next 3 years were spent in Melbourne before Guy was asked to take charge of some Aid projects in Bangladesh for the Australian Government over a two year period. During this time with Shirley and Simon, Guy was able to travel throughout India and to fulfill  one of his life long dreams...to see the 'Taj Mahal'

Then, after a short period in Canberra, a 7 year stint in Hong Kong followed, Guy being involved in some major building projects and in the redevelopment of the Kowloon Canton Railway stations. Returning to Australia  once again Guy and Shirley were based in Sydney where Guy was involved in the restoration of the Queen Victoria Building. Another move a couple of years later saw them in Port Douglas where they have happily lived for the past 21 years.

Guy eventually retired from Architecture giving him more time to pursue his hobbies of collecting and restoring Antique Clocks, book binding and reading, amongst his favourite authors were Arthur Ransome, Dornford Yates and Dumas, he also loved reading anything about the Sea, and Admiral Nelson. He had a great love of Classical Music his favourite Composer being Beethoven.

He became a volunteer with Ballyhooley Steam Railway in Port Douglas, and nothing gave him greater pleasure than, on Sundays, to join the children on either 'Speedy' or 'Bundy' or doing odd jobs, such as repairing seats, or platforms, painting signs or making labels etc. for the railway.

As a teenager he taught himself to sail on the Norfolk Broads, and did a lot of sailing in Melbourne becoming a member of the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron at St Kilda. He never lost his great love of Ships and the Sea.

In later years he and Shirley were able to make a number of trips to the UK to visit his family, friends... and 'old haunts' ... even sailing on the Broads once again.

Of his three sons of whom he was so proud, Chris lives in Cairns with his wife Jan, they have two daughters, Jacqui and Teagan, Chris is a singer who performs regularly around the country. Jay and his wife Tinna live in Canada where Jay works with high performance cars, having himself been a racing car driver. and Simon lives between Europe, Hong Kong and Australia he is an IT Specialist.

Guy and Shirley became Australian citizens many years ago. Guy was immensely proud to call himself Australian, often saying that "Australia is the best country in the world" also saying that it had allowed him to live a wonderful life. and we believe that he certainly had that !!

Guy will be greatly missed by his loving family and many friends.
